7 Signs That It’s Time for A New AC Unit

June 4, 2019

Are you wondering if those long, hot summer days have taken their toll on your air conditioning unit? Perhaps you’re questioning if it’s time for an upgrade but aren’t sure of the signs to look for.

Your AC unit can withstand constant use and the harsh elements for only so long before it has reached its retirement age. Here are some of the telltale signs that it might be that time for your current air conditioning unit.

These 7 signs will help you determine if you need a new AC unit:

1. It Doesn’t Do Its Job
2. It’s Reached the End of Its Year Lifespan
3. Your Energy Bills Have Substantially Increased
4. Your Warranty Has Expired
5. It’s Starting Up More Frequently
6. Repair After Repair After Repair!
7. Your System Is Louder Than Usual

1. It Doesn’t Do Its Job

Your AC unit has one primary job: to keep you cool and comfortable. As obvious as it may seem, when your unit can no longer perform the way it should to keep your home at an ideal temperature, it could very well be time for an upgrade.

If your unit takes more than a few minutes to produce cold air, this could be a solid indication that it’s on its last leg. Pay attention to the level of humidity in your home as well. A well-function air conditioning unit will prevent that unwanted sticky feeling of humidity in the air.

2. It’s Reached the End of Its Lifespan

According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average lifespan of an air conditioning unit is 10 to 15 years. Your unit’s specific lifespan depends on a number of variables including its brand, size, level of quality, amount of use, and how often it’s received professional maintenance.

It’s safe to say that air conditioning units with more frequent and thorough maintenance will live a longer, more efficient life.

3. Your Energy Bills Have Substantially Increased

If you’ve noticed a recent spike in your energy bill, it could very well be tied to an air conditioning unit that is working too hard to get the job done. Even when the unit is properly cooling your home to a comfortable level, it could still be overworking itself to get there.

Beware of a less efficient air conditioning unit because it could quickly and sneakily be draining your wallet. If you suspect this is happening to you, consider an immediate AC replacement.

4. Your Warranty Has Expired

So, your air conditioning unit has broken down and requires an expensive replacement part, but you soon find out that the warranty has expired. An expired warranty means more out of pocket expenses for you and unfortunately, some replacement parts are not cheap. If this is the case, a new air conditioning unit may be the smarter financial move rather than replacing pricey, broken down parts on an older unit.

Another factor to consider is that some AC warranties last for most of the functioning lifespan of the unit. If your warranty has expired, it may be a good idea to consider how old your unit is and perhaps it has reached the end of its efficient lifespan.

5. It’s Starting Up More Frequently

When your unit requires a replacement, you might notice that it kicks on more often and stays on longer. This can be caused by a number of factors that can be fixed with replacement parts, but in other cases will point to an air conditioning unit that has reached its final days.

If your system was recently repaired or serviced and you’re still noticing increased running time, it very well may be time to replace it. A well-functioning, efficient air conditioning system should only start up when necessary and will be able to cool the air in your home at a reasonable speed.

6. Repair After Repair After Repair!

Thankfully, air conditioning systems contain many individual components that are repairable and replaceable. If a single piece begins to break down, it can be a fairly simple process to make that simple repair. While repairs and part replacements are normal and expected with AC units, it may also be a sign that your unit has reached the end of its lifespan if the repairs have become frequent and costly.

Some parts of an air conditioning unit are so essential that the price of repair is exceptionally high. For example, if components like the compressor, coil, or motor have failed, it may not be worth the cost to replace them and instead, replace the entire unit.

Replacing your old, broken down system with a new one could be a better financial decision in the long-run.

7. Your System Is Louder Than Usual

While AC units are not silent and do typically get louder with age, there are some noises that it may start to produce which should be immediate red flags.

We recommend considering an entire air conditioning unit replacement when you hear the blower humming abnormally loud, when the outdoor unit is substantially noisy, when you hear significant noise before the unit kicks on, and when the furnace makes a “banging” sound.

Some noises in an AC system can be attributed to loose parts or parts that need repair or replacement. Unfortunately, the sounds we described are usually related to more significant problems that indicate an aging unit that is ready to be replaced.

Maintaining an air conditioning unit can feel overwhelming at times, especially when you aren’t familiar with its exact components and how they function. It’s important to know the signs to look out for when your system begins to age toward the end of its life so you know when to replace it. By knowing and understanding the common signs of an AC unit that’s ready to be retired, you may save yourself from a major headache and major financial blow.
