Common Roofing Problems and How to Deal with Them

July 22, 2019

At some point in their life, most homeowners have experienced roofing issues. From minor issues to major repairs, roof problems require attention to avoid a much larger problem down the line. To help you with the maintenance of your roof, we’ve compiled a list of common roof problems and how to manage them.

1. Clogged Gutters

Damaged or clogged gutters can create a multitude of issues, one of them being that water can pool and back up into the system. In this case, it could eventually seep into parts of your roof and give you rotting issues.

In order to prevent this problem, make sure you’re routinely checking your gutters for any and all debris. It may also be beneficial to install screens into your gutters that prevent larger, more damaging debris from getting into the system.

2. Roof Leaks

One of the most common roofing problems that homeowners face is having a leaky roof. From minor cracks to broken shingles or tiles, there are several causes for having a roof that leaks.

Roof leaks most commonly occur near a chimney, under broken or damaged shingles, around gutters, near skylights, close to vents, or in lower spots of the roof. If you notice a leak, which can be the cause of damp walls or discolored ceilings, contact us today for a thorough inspection from one of our highly skilled specialists.

3. Holes

Almost anything can cause a puncture or hole in your roof, from critters to branches. Whether it’s a pesky bird trying to drill a hole or wear and tear over time, holes in the roof can cause a variety of issues for any homeowner. A hole can allow water and debris to flood into the eaves and cause molding, rotting, and even critter infiltration.

If you notice a hole or puncture in your roof, please contact us to assess the damage and inspect the roof.

4. Pooled Water

Excessive amounts of rain or weather may not bare well for all roofs. When water pools on your roof, this can also cause a long list of problems. This may be especially troublesome for flat roofs.

Make sure to maintain your roof frequently by inspecting it for pooling water to avoid problems with rot and mold in the future. If you do see water pooling and aren’t sure how to fix the issue, don’t hesitate to contact us on the matter.

5. Poor of Faulty Insulation

Faulty insulation of your roofing material can increase the likelihood of problems you will face in the future and shorten your roof system’s life expectancy.

If you notice issues with your roof and they don’t seem to come from one of the other common problems on the list, it’s a good idea to contact one of our professionals to ensure the insulation in your roof has been installed correctly.

6. Unwanted Critters

Depending on what region you live in, small animals, birds, and insects may try to make themselves at home in your roof. Of course, this can cause a surprising amount of damage depending on the critter.

If you catch a problem like this early, it’s best to evict them right away before they invite their families! If the problem has escalated past the point of being able to handle it on your own, we recommend asking for professional help on the matter.

7. Trees

Trees that are not maintained and begin to overgrow can cause major problems for your roof. Overhanging limbs can rub on your roof and, over time, cause unwanted wear and tear to your roof’s protective layer and/or shingles.

Branches may also fall on the roof and create more costly damage, like holes or punctures. Remember that tree limbs growing near your home and roof should be frequently trimmed back to avoid any threat.

8. Ventilation

One of the most important parts in maintaining your roof is proper ventilation. Without it, moisture and air have nowhere to go and can become trapped in the attic space. Not only does this cause problems like mold, rot, and deterioration but it can also cause your energy bill to spike.

Proper ventilation regulates temperature and moisture levels to avoid this problem. If you notice higher energy costs or excessive moisture in your attic, poor ventilation could be to blame.

If you are experiencing any of these common roof problems, know that a solution is not far out of reach. Contact us today to have one of our skilled and experienced professionals provide a thorough inspection and begin to plan for the proper solution to your problem.

  1. It's great to know that the lack of ventilation could cause issues for the roofing system because of trapped moisture that also causes mold and an increase in energy bills. Our roof actually doesn't have enough ventilation but I'm not surprised since we live in a hundred-year-old house. If we experience any more detrimental issues, it won't be long until my dad calls a trusted repair service.
