7 Ways to Save On Your Electricity Bill

Let’s face it, energy bills are anything but cheap. Prices add up quickly when you take into account all that you’re paying for, not to mention the air conditioning on those hot summer days and the heat in the dead of winter.

The good news is that there are steps you can take to lower your electricity bill in significant ways. By taking advantage of the tips and tricks below, you can lower your monthly energy payment by as much as 25%!

These 7 easy tips will help you save on electricty:

1. Utilize the “Off” Switch
2. Look for the “Energy Star” Logo on Your Appliances
3. Replace Old Light Bulbs with CFLs
4. Replace Your Furnace Filter And Do It Often!
5. Tend to Air Conditioner Maintenance
6. Clean Out Dryer Lint
7. Install Dimmer Switches

1. Utilize the “Off” Switch

It may seem obvious but more times than not, we forget to power off our electricity-guzzling electronics, causing our energy bill to be inflated with power that we aren’t even using.

It’s also a great idea to invest in a power strip or two for your home electronics because even while they’re turned off, they’re still using electricity.

According to the Department of Energy, 75% of electrical use by home electronics occurs when they are powered off and this could cost you upwards of an additional $100 a year. To avoid these hidden costs, we recommend using power strips and remembering to switch them off when you’re not using your electronics.

Not only could this protect your wallet, but it will give your electronics a break from wear and tear and a constant flow of electricity.

2. Look for the “Energy Star” Logo on Your Appliances

The “Energy Star” label indicates that products meet strict standards of efficiency in energy use, so it’s a good idea to look for appliances and electronics with this blue and white logo.

According to Energy Star, choosing these electricity saving products over the alternative could save you up to 30% in energy bills annually. But no need to worry about replacing every appliance you have in order to achieve significant savings. By just replacing your refrigerator you could save at least $110 per year.

3. Replace Old Light Bulbs with CFLs or LED Lights

A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) or compact fluorescent and LED lights are energy saving light bulbs that produces the same beautiful white light as regular light bulbs for a fraction of the cost. CFLs and LED lights can provide upwards of 10,000 hours of light for a small price of about $10.

Choosing a CFL or LED over a traditional light bulb is one of the easiest and quickest ways to reduce your energy bill. This small but effective change in your habits reduces light bulb energy by about 75% and the good news is that they can last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Choosing CFLs and LEDs over traditional light bulbs not only saves you money but also trips to the store.

4. Replace Your Furnace Filter And Do It Often!

It’s a good idea to replace your furnace filter for a number of reasons, one of them being to save energy. An overly clogged filter with dust and other unwanted particles causes your furnace to work harder due to the lack of airflow. This not only causes a strain on your furnace but also causes a spike in your energy bill.

We recommend changing your furnace filter every month it’s being used, primarily during the summer and winter months. It doesn’t take long for an air filter to back up which is why regularly changing them will provide you with better air, a longer lasting furnace, and lower energy bill prices.

5. Tend to Air Conditioner Maintenance

Did you know that about half of an average home’s electricity bill is spent on heating and cooling? This is why it would benefit you, in the long run, to practice regular maintenance on your air conditioning unit. The best way to do this is by spending a couple of hours each year ensuring that the fins are straight, the unit is clean, the filter is replaced, and the motor is lubricated.

It’s also beneficial to put your AC unit in a cool, shaded area, rather than in direct sunlight. Placing a unit in the direct sun will cause it to use about 10 percent more energy and can easily shorten its lifespan.

Lastly, keep your air conditioner turned up to ensure it runs at peak efficiency. If your unit is over ten years old, consider upgrading to an Energy Star unit to cut your costs by 30 percent. AC maintenance is a small but important step you can take by reducing your electricity bill in an area that will truly make an impact on your wallet.

6. Clean Out Dryer Lint

Much like replacing furnace filters, cleaning out lint from your dryer duct can significantly improve the efficiency (and safety) of your dryer. A clogged lint catcher is not only asking for a spike in your electricity bill, but it can also create a dangerous situation by increasing the risk of dryer fires.

Make sure you keep the lint screen on your dryer clean after every single load and clear out the exhaust duct annually. This is a quick and easy process that can be done with an inexpensive brush which can be purchased at any home center.

It’s also smart to dry your loads of laundry relatively close to one another in order to prevent the dryer from fully cooling down. This will save energy so the dryer doesn’t have to reheat every single time. And if you’re looking to purchase a new dryer, consider choosing gas as it is the more efficient option.

7. Install Dimmer Switches

By installing a dimmer switch for your lights, you have the ability to set the lights at whatever level of brightness you prefer and in turn, using less energy. This can create a peaceful ambiance in your home while also saving money from escaping your wallet and causing unnecessarily high electricity bills!

This can also allow you to leave the lights on for a prolonged period of time without having to worry about wasting energy. Dimmer lights equal less electricity which equals less money spent on your next energy bill.

We know that electricity bills can really break the bank if you’re not utilizing your options in the smartest and most efficient way. We hope these tips can help you to cut back on your energy usage without feeling like you have to live uncomfortably and overly cautious of every step you take. Consider making these small changes and see the electricity bill savings for yourself.
